My husband and I are visiting our daughter who is studying abroad and lives in Viterbo. Besides Rome where else should we consider? I am thinking about Dec 20-27th and we are okay with hopping on a plane. Thxs
I suggest you talk to your daughter and see if there's somewhere she's heard of that she wants to visit. You are in a lovely region to begin with, I'd go north to Orvieto and wander up to Montepulciano.
Mode of transportation is a factor. If possible, I'd take the train to Orvieto and rent a car for the duration. I'd love to be in a small town for Christmas.
We spent 10 days in Chianti just before Christmas and had a great time. It was off season and not at all crowded, except for Rome. Have you been to Italy before?
Congrats on your daughter studying abroad. Our grandson spent two years in France. We did a similar visit when he was living in Loches, a small town near Tours. It was nice to just absorb small town life in Europe.
Viterbo itself has a nice historic center and sees very, very few foreign tourists. The smaller town of Tuscania immediately to the west is also very picturesque.
Orvieto is a great favorite of mine, with lots of sights to take in. It is quite touristy, though many of the tourists are Italian (possibly Romans visiting for a day or a weekend).
