From the airport you can go to Rome Termini or Rome Tiburtina. When searching for trains on Trenitalia the word "Tutti"means all in Italian so you get multiple departure points from Rome as there is more then one train station. You can buy a train ticket to both stations from the airport.

From Rome Fiumicino airport, there are two train lines. One goes nonstop to Roma Termini station, and one goes with intermediate stops to Roma Tiburtina station. Just make sure you get on the correct one for your next train to Matera.

If you wait to buy your ticket at the airport train station on arrival, they will sell you tickets for both trains (airport to Rome and Rome to Matera). This way, you don't have to worry about making a particular train, in case of delays.

If you are searching schedules, do use the "Roma (tutti)" option, since this will include both stations. But "tutti" means "all" - it's not a station. You have to know whether your train is leaving from Tiburtina or Termini.

You'll need to take a Trenitalia train to the station in Rome to catch the Italo train to Salerno and connecting bus to Matera. The Leonardo Express goes to Termini and regional trains go to Tiburtina. I don't recall whether you can buy Italo tickets at the airport, as no Italo trains go there. If they are sold at the airport, it's probably at one of the travel agencies at the FCO train station. In that case, they can also sell you tickets to the correct Rome train station at the same price as from the Trenitalia ticket window or kiosk. Italo tickets can also be purchased at either train station in Rome; just be sure which station you're going to before buying tickets into Rome at the FCO train station.

If you are going to Matera by train/bus please make sure you stay in one of the cave hotels. It is worth the experience. Make sure you have good walking shoes at the "streets" are very rough cobblestone and they twist and turn. We stayed at La Corte dei Pastori. Great views.
