What is the best way to travel from Venice to Padua (without spending a fortune)? We will be doing so in late September.
Go to Trenitalia website to see schedule/pricing--it's a short train ride.
Frequent Regionale trains from Venice S. Lucia to Padova. Fare is €4.70 each way. No need to buy tix in advance. The trip takes about half an hour.
The cheapest (and slowest) trains run by Trenitalia cost € 4.7 per person, one way. These local trains have no reserved seating and can't sell out.
The most expensive (and fastest) train run by Trenitalia costs € 20 pp if you get tickets on the day of travel. Is either fare "a fortune" for you?
I guess you can open your guide and discover by yourself Italotreno's web address. Their high speed trains should cost less than € 20.
If you're flying into Venice and headed directly to Padova you could take one of the buses that leaves directly from the airport.
The Regionale Veloce trains are the same speed as the Freccia trains and still cost only 4.70 EUR each way. They go Venice SL to Padova in 27 minutes and go every 30 minutes at 10 and 40 past the hour. Returns are at 22 and 53 past the hour.
