I am taking my elderly parents (70) to Venice. We are booked for a week thereafter in Maratea (in the south of Italy.
We need to get from Venice to Naples (preferably via train), to rent a vehicle and then driove down to Maratea. Are there any trains available? If so, which one would you recommend?
There are plenty of trains available. You can check the trenitalia website for fares and schedules. Looks like it will take between 5 and 6 hours with a change of trains at either Bologna or Rome termini. http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD Be sure to enter Venezia S. Lucia and Napoli centrale as your stations. Reset the time to 7 a.m. to see the trains for the day. I would recommend booking one of the high speed trains. They are more expensive but you won't waste hours of your trip like you will if you book the slower trains. Also, book second class seats. There isn't much difference between first and second class so just save the money for other things. donna
The standard 2nd class fare on high-speed trains is €76.00 for Venice-Rome and €45.00 for Rome-Naples. However, booked well in advance at trenitalia.com, you can get Mini fares for each leg as low as €9.00. There is a limited number of seats for each Mini fare level. When the cheapest ones are gone, the price goes up by €10.00. When those are gone, the price goes up another €10.00, etc.
