Hi, We will be staying in Venice and would like to take an excusion to the Island of Burano. How is the easist and least expensive way to get there. How much travel time to and from Burano should I plan for? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
you'll take the vaporetto to Burano. You may want to buy a 24 or 12 hour pass. You can stop at Murano and then venture on to Burano.
IF you have the time after Burano, you may want to hop on over to Torcello. Much different than the other islands
The journey to Burano will take up to 90 minutes one-way depending on where you catch the vaporetto. Also, the vaporettos that go to Burano have routes that are different from those that go up and down the Grand Canal. Depending on where you catch the vaporetto, you want the 42, 52, LN or DM.
When we were last in Venice a representative of a glass factory on Murano came around to our hotel and asked us if we wanted a ride to the island. He must have thought we had money to blow. It was a great ride in a speed boat, and free. So check with your concierge to see if he can set that up. But be careful with your comments when you are there, because when the guy who was showing us all the great, but expensive, glass creations realized we didn't have money to blow, he "ushered" us into a smaller room with less expensive stuff, before we were ready to stop seeing the grand pieces.
The glass factory hustlers do promise you a free water taxi ride to Murano. Its all to get you to buy. If you don't, you don't get the free ride back. Not a problem. The public vaporetto works just fine.
It's a loooong boat (vaporetto) ride, because Burano is much farther out than Murano and you have to stop at some other islands along the way. It is a very quaint place and very picturesque, much more so than Murano. Plan ahead and don't miss your boat back.
Recently returned from Italy. Spent 6 nights in Venice and one day we did the islands of Murano and Burano. All the info. is in Rick's book. We had multi day vaporetti passes. Of the 2 islands, I prefer Burano but do stop in Murano for a bit if you have time. The vaporetti will drop you off in Murano at the Colonna stop but to go on to Burano you must go to the Faro stop. The brightly colored houses on Burano are charming. We were in Burano a couple years ago during the evening pasagiata (sp?) and it was very fun to see. I think it was around 6 p.m. Have a great trip!
