Hello, does anyone know the best way to travel from Venice to Lake Como? We are looking at trains from Venice to Milan to Como OR to Varenna. It appears that we would need to use different train stations in Milan so would we take a taxi between the two?
There are trains to both Varenna and the town of Como from Milano Centrale,,which is where your Venice train will land you. The Como San Giovanni station is a bit away from the lake, uphill, but there are buses and taxis down to the lakeshore if that is where you are going. There is a different train service, Tre Nord, that uses different stations, and their Como station is right down by the lake. Younwould have to change trains from Milano Centrale to get there. Maybe this is what you were thinking of?
It's very simple to get to Varenna from Venice using Trenitalia. You start off at Venezia Santa Lucia (the only train station in Venice proper) and take the Frecciabianca high speed train to Milano Centrale. At Milano Central you switch to a Regionale (local) train to Varenna-Esino. It takes about 4.5 hours. I'm not sure why you think you would need to use different train stations in Milan.
What is the name of the other station that you thought you might have to use in Milan? If we know the name perhaps we could help clear up the confusion. There are really two stations. The main one - Centrale - and Cadorna which handles some traffic to the west - Genoa, etc.
Yes someone had told me about the Nord station in Como, closer to the water, but trains do not leave from Milan Centrale. Sounds like Varenna might be the way to go. Thanks for your responses.
