Is there a new travel document needed in 2025 besides passport to enter these countries. We are planning to rent a car from Zurich Airport and drive into Italy and back.

You need IDP for car rental. I believe some roads in Switzerland may require a vignette, so best to check over itinerary.

If you rent a car in Switzerland, it will come with a Swiss vignette attached.

We drove from Italy to Lugano, Switzerland and back a couple years ago and there was just a sign saying “Welcome to Switzerland / Italy”. There was a pull off for trucks (and I assume for people who needed to declare something) but otherwise it was nonstop.
