We wil be traveling on June 2 which I understand is a National Holiday in Italy similar to July 4th in US. Any ideas on what difficulties we might encounter? Our hotel in Sorrento has already informed us that the bus schedule from Florence to Siena is on a reduced schedule so we are concerned about restaurants, other modes of transportation, etc.
While buses may be limited, you would have no problem going by train. Trenitalia website shows trains about hourly on June 2. Note that the IC train connecting though Chiusi is about half the price of the high speed train connecting though Florence, and it takes only 30 minutes longer. Circumvesuviana appears to be on its normal schedule that day (twice hourly). You can check schedules for the Circumvesuviana at the new and greatly improved website www.vesuviana.it.
We plan to drive Siena-Sorrento Jun 1. Visit Pompeii Jun 2 and drive to Rome return rental late Jun 2. Was wondering why many car rental offices in Rome close on Jun 2. Now I know it's a holiday, will allow more travel time. May skip Sorrento and stay at Pompeii instead. Thanks for your posting. Do you know if the entire weekend a holiday?
