Travel from Sorrento to Rome

Hi All,
Need some guidance in planning my travel from Sorrento to Rome. I am planning to leave Sorrento by 2pm or so and intend to reach Rome by atleast 8-9 pm. My stay booked in Sorrento is at Hotel Jaccarino and intend to roam round the beach till afternoon on the day of travel to Rome. I have booked my stay in Rome near the Vatican City.

Thanks in advance !!

Simple. Sorrento to Naples via the infamous Circumvesuviano train (which is just fine). In Naples, walk upstairs and catch the next fast train to Rome. Easy peasey.

free,

While the Circumvesuviana will get you from Sorrento to Naples, you'd probably be more comfortable on the Campania Express - https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/campania-express-train-schedule . If you use the Circumvesuviana, watch your luggage carefully so that it doesn't "disappear".

With either train you'll arrive at the Garibaldi station, which is downstairs from Napoli Centrale. Walk up to Centrale and connect with either the Freccia or Italo high speed trains for your trip to Rome.

There are no reserved seats for the trains from Sorrento to Naples. However the high speed trains have compulsory reservations which are specific to train, date and departure time. You can save money with advance purchase (non refundable) tickets for the high speed trains, but you must be willing to commit to using a specific train. If you're not concerned about the money, just buy tickets for the high speed trains on the day of travel.

Make sure to buy in advance Trenitalia or Italotreno tickets, to get the cheapest fare. Last minute bookings may cost a lot more. Trains depart like every hour, you can easily check on their websites

Also the trains from Naples to Rome do sell out in high season. Once in July we didn't prebook tickets and the next two trains were sold out. We had to hang around the Naples train station for over two hours till we could get on a train. Fortunately they are frequent, but at least in summer they can sell out.

We did this last summer. We'd heard about a lot of pickpockets on the circumvesuviana train and I didn't want to risk it when we had all of our luggage (and are most vulnerable). I'd also read about having to switch train lines, etc. We opted to take the hydrofoil from Sorrento to Naples and then a taxi to the train station and then train to Rome. It was perhaps more hassle but the view on the hydrofoil was gorgeous and not having to stress about pickpockets made it more relaxing for us. We pre-booked everything online before our trip, through the recommendations in the RS guide.

Pricing strategy of the Frecciarossa trains (Naples-Rome) makes it essential to buy two or more months in advance. The tickets can't be changed or refunded, just like air tickets today. I don't believe the Freccia stops at S. Pietro (Roma). If you have small luggage, you can take the Circumvesuviana without fear. Many fearmongers are not familiar with big city public transit that has a heterogeneous customer body. If you are on this newsboard, you probably already have an inside the belt money pouch. I got one long ago, after a young kid went after my zipper belt pouch on the street in ROME.

We did this in Dec but took a private car from Sorrento to the Naples train station. We did it to save time and hassle. The fast commuter train does not run in the off season. In the busy season it can be pretty crowded from what we read.

Hi
I will be arriving at Naples airport around 11 pm. I was wondering that can i take a cab from airport and based on my Hotel checkin timings I can reach my Hotel in Sorrento, so that i can save the next time. Are the private cab ride in night time safe from Naples to Sorrento.

Regards
Sreedevi

At that time of night, you'll need to take a cab or hired driver (some of the folks here will have some recommendations for drivers) as neither the Circumvesuviana or Curreri bus from the airport run that late. It's some distance between Naples and Sorrento so I expect that it's going to be a costly ride.

11:00 PM is a really late arrival time for a 4 year-old, especially as it'll be another hour or more before you reach Sorrento. Where will you be coming from, and could you possibly rearrange your plan to arrive earlier? If not, I'd be sure that your accommodation is open for check-in beyond midnight. Another option would be to cancel the arrival night in Sorrento, stay in Naples, and then proceed to Sorrento the next day.
