Travel from Sorrento to Rome

We would like to take the bus from Sorrento to Rome but it goes to Tiburtina Station much farther from our hotel near Piazza Navona and not to Statione Centrale which is much closer. We can take the train but are not excited by dragging luggage on the Circumvesuviana to Centrale and another train to Rome. Any suggestions.

The good thing about taking the trains is that you will be getting on at the beginning of the journey so should not have problem with getting seats. We always take slow train from Naples to Rome to save money and most of all we did not find it as crowded but maybe was just our luck.

If you take the bus you'll have to either walk to your hotel from tiburtina station, get a cab to your hotel or hop on the B metro to the termini station then take a cab or walk. Either way, it's a lot of changing. If you take the train you'll end up at the termini then you can take a cab or walk to your hotel. I think no matter what you do you're going to have to transfer your luggage at least once so I would pick the fastest option. Be sure not to over pack. You'll want to be able to lift all your own luggage as there is no one to help you with it. Donna

Thanks for the info. You're right, the less transferring the better.

No big alternate suggestions if you want to take the Currieri or Mazorri bus. Note that they only depart Rome-Tiburtina once daily in the afternoon. As mentioned above, you will not get away from the luggage issue no matter what you do. The bus is easier in that regard.

Hi all, I'm doing something simliar to Jim. How long would it take from Sorrento to Rome by train? I have an 11am flight to catch from Rome and wondering if I could stay the night before in Sorrento and still make the airport. My alternative is to stay overnight in Naples and travel to Rome early in the morning. Thanks

From Sorrento to Naples, it will take 55 minutes to one hour and 5 minutes. Depend on what time of the day and which train. From Naples to Rome. The ES will take one hour and 15 minutes. The IC will be around one hour and forty five minutes and the Regineale R train will take two hours fifteen minutes to two hours and thirty five minutes. The IC and R trains make different shops, the EV are non stop.
Also the trains form Sorrento to Naples are locate train. It will start running after 5 AM in the morning. I can't recall what time.

Beyond rick's answer, there is also time for connections. You need time to get to and on the train in Sorrento, time in Naples to wait for the Rome train after getting upstairs, then time in Rome to find the airport train, and, not mentioned above, time to travel on the airport train, and then time to check in for your flight. Personally, unless you get up, literally, in the middle of the night, I don't think you have a cat's chance.

Greg, If your flight is 11AM, you need to arrive the airport by say 9:30 to 10. I do not think you can make it from Sorrento. From Naples, maybe, if so, check out the train schedule and buy the ticket days before.
Have a good trip!

Thanks to everyone for the information. We are taking the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento and will buy IC train tickets to Roma at a travel agency in Sorrento. Then a cab to the hotel. Grazie a tutti for the help.
