I am planning a day trip from Sorrento to Positano. My plan was to take the ferry each way; however in the Rick Steves book he suggests to take the bus there and the ferry back, but I'm not sure why. I'd like to take the ferry each way as I'm thinking the views will be wonderful. Does anyone know why he would suggest taking the bus there? Thanks in advance.
I don't know his thinking, but I can come up with two reasons:
- The bus is probably significantly cheaper
- You'll see different scenery from the bus. It's not safe to assume that only the coastal view is worth seeing (though I haven't traveled inland beween Sorrento and Positano).
There are dramtic mountain and sea views from the bus as you head towards Positano.
The main reason is because you would have the sun at your back if you plan on taking pictures.
The problem is that you need to check the ferry schedule as it has limited late Afternoon return times.
If you are wanting more than a few hours, then take the ferry there and bus back. The bus runs well past 18:00
You get a different perspective I suppose. He also suggests getting off at the first bus stop which is at the top of the town. I can certainly attest that it’s an enjoyable wander and there are few tourists away from the harbor. This was actually the only time/place in Italy where everyone I passed gave me a smile and a “Buongiorno!”
That said, I’d take the ferry any day of the week and twice on Sunday. It’s much more enjoyable. The bus can get packed and hot fast. You’d be fortunate if you got to choose what side to sit on. Everyone is trying to do the same thing you are on the bus. You can easily end up waiting needlessly for a bus that isn’t full, especially later in the afternoon as everyone tries to get back to where they’re staying. You are also subject to the traffic snarls (and I saw some doozies). Just the bus from Amalfi to Ravello was brutal, can’t imagine doing it for an hour plus.
Ferry all the way!
One caution: If the weather is bad, the ferry does not run. That said, I would arrive by bus and return by ferry. The drive is beautiful although at times it can be heart stopping. When you arrive at the port stop at the ferry terminal and ask about the schedule so that if the ferry is not running you can plan to catch the bus back.
Thanks. everyone for the responses. I think we will plan on doing the ferry both ways with the bus as a plan B.
For the best views go to Positano by bus and sit on the right hand side. Back by ferry.
