We're going to Italy for 2 weeks in May....flying into Naples and taking the bus directly to Sorrento for 3 days. What is the best way to get back to Naples and then to Rome? Bus or train? Is the Metrostar operating yet?
I would take the Circumvesuviana train back to Naples, then you just go upstairs to get the train to Rome. You could also take a ferry back to Naples, but then you would need to take a bus or taxi to the train station.
Nadine...thank you. Sounds easier than we had anticipated.
the commuter train is not as scary as people said. sometimes it's quite empty and all you see are bunch of school kids and old people but no pick pocketers. if you do want to avoid it, then the speed boat is pretty quick. the ferry is very close to the new casle for some quick pics, and the taxi is cheap. From Naples train to Rome is pretty easy, even first class ticket is not expensive.
Bus directly from Sorrento to Rome.
From Naples to Rome, you have three choices of trains: AV high-speed train: 44 Euros and 70 minutes; or ES Eurostar train: 34 Euros and 105 minutes; or IC Intercity train: 20.50 Euros and 120 minutes. There are also a couple of slower regionale trains (10.50 Euros) with unreserved seats, which take over 2.5 hours, but these should be avoided by anyone who is looking for a higher-quality train. BTW, the Circumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Napoli Centrale costs 3.40 Euros and takes 65 minutes (sometimes a bit less). Allow at least 20 minutes connection time to board your Rome-bound Trenitalia train (to avoid having to rush).
