I am trying to find the best way to travel from a Sorrento hotel to Rome's Fiumicino Airport in September - flight, car service, or train. Flights seem cheaper than a car service and I can't seem to figure out a train schedule. Any help would be appreciated?
The only flight from Sorrento would be in a helicopter; the closest commercial airport to Sorrento is Naples (NAP). If you are flying out of NAP, there is a bus direct from Sorrento, or for about €80 you can take a taxi.
The train from Sorrento to Naples is a private line, the Circumvesuviana, that does not show up on all schedules, since it's not run by Trenitalia. It takes 70 minutes from Sorrento to Naples. You then change to a Trenitalia train from Naples to Rome. From Roma Termini station, you would then need another train to the airport.
For the Sorrento to Naples portion, some prefer a car service (it's certainly more convenient and pleasant). And from Roma Termini to FCO, a taxi has a fixed rate of €48; however, it may not be faster, as it can get stuck in traffic while the train won't. A car all the way from Sorrento to FCO will cost several hundred euros.
What time is your flight, and where is it to (nonstop to the US, or connecting to another airport in Europe)? This will determine if you can even be in Sorrento on the same day as a flight out of FCO, or should be closer to FCO the night before. For nonstops to the US, you really need to be at FCO three hours before departure; for other destinations, you need less time.
That is a long ways to go with no direct connections. My first assumption is that you can not do it. What is your flight schedule?
Travel time is about three hours either by train or taxi/car service from Sorrento to FCO. If you have a mid- to late afternoon flight and everything goes perfectly, you might make it by public transportation, depending on how far in advance to need to be at the airport. Travel time does not include getting through security and to your gate.
I also am staying in Sorrento and I've arranged a car to Naples airport, then taking a flight to Rome.
I was in Sorrento in October 2014. Whenever in Italy, I usually spend one night in Rome before flying back to U.S. so that I don't have to rush in the morning.
From Sorrento:
1. Take Circumvesuviana train all the way to Napoli. It leaves from Sorrento every 30 minutes. Duration is 70 minutes.
2. Take a bullet train from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini. It leaves every an hour or so. Duration is about 1.5 hrs.
Then you have options:
3. Stay in Rome for the night and take a cab or Leonard Da Vinci Express to FCO the next day depending on your flight schedule.
4. Take Leonardo Da Vinci Express to FCO and stay at an airport hotel nearby for the night.
OR
5. Go all the way to FCO on the same day.
I am going back to Napoli in October 2015. I am currently researching my #3 and #4 hotel options. My flight usually leave in the morning(anywhere from 0600 to 1030 departure depending on Airlines), so spending a night somewhere in Rome/FCO area is the best option.
Whatever the method you choose, it is going to be a lot of stress involved on your transition day. Unfamiliar surroundings and super congested train stations are hectic while pushing/hauling luggage. Please give yourself plenty of time to get to FCO.
An important note: the Circumvesuviana does not run 24/7!!! The earliest run to Naples currently STARTS at 6:00 AM so it's important to know what time your flight leaves Fiumicino.
You can see the train schedule from Sorrento to Naples - from which you'd have to take another train to Rome - here:

As already mentioned, there are no flights from Sorrento; the nearest airport is in Naples (Napoli).
Because our 2014 trip was an open-jaw transatlantic flight, we spend our only nights in Rome, the last three, after five nights in Sorrento. That made for a relaxed transfer. And since we had really cheap advance-purchase high-speed tickets from Naples to Rome, we could use them only on one train. Although we got to Naples in time for the preceding train, they wouldn't let us change the tickets for free. So we had coffee on the bench. That Frecciarossa train was a big change from Italian trains even six or eight years ago, very professional. I can't imagine flying from Naples to Rome.
I will say that we took a car service from our Sorrento hotel to the Naples train station. That's because the Circumvesuviana with luggage (May) had been such an unpleasant experience. But even with a professional driver, we knew we were subject to highway traffic and choke points on that relatively short trip. And we knew we'd be overcharged for a cab just from the Ambasciatori to the Circumvesuviana - as we had been coming into town. Roof light but NO meter.
Linda,
A car to Naples airport and then a flight to Rome will take considerably longer than using trains, and will certainly be more of a hassle. It will most likely also be considerably more expensive.
A car to Napoli Centrale (if you wish to avoid the Circumvesuviana) and a high speed train (which travels at up to 300 kmH) from there to Rome would be much faster.
Your choice of course.....
Ken,
My thinking is that airport (naples) to airport (rome) is less complicated than Train to Train, change to another Train, then another Train to FCO. There are 3 of us sharing the car service cost and the flight from Naples to Rome is cheap. Am I missing something?
Thank you to everyone for their suggestions. I have decided to take a car service to Naples airport and fly to Rome.
