Travel from Siena to Sorrento - May, 2018

Looking for advice. There's a group of six adults looking for quickest/most efficient way to travel from Siena to Sorrento. We will not have a car. Should we take the train from Siena to Florence then travel via train to Sorrento? Is there a train from Siena to Sorrento? OR take a train to Naples and find another mode of transportation to Sorrento? Thank you.

Siena is beautiful and so is Sorrento. Keep that in mind as you go from one place to the other, which can be a bit off-putting. First, I really prefer the bus from Siena to Florence especially if you are staying in the medieval city center. It's more scenic, more frequent, and easier to get to from the city center. In Florence, come out of the bus station and turn left - the train station is pretty much at the end of the block. Take the Freccia (high speed line) to Naples (Napolie Centrale). There will be a stop in Rome but no change of train. Now in Naples you have choices! Don't bother with the train, Circumvesuviana, to Sorrento. With 6 people a car service might be most cost effective and easiest. Your hotel or apartment manager can help you with that. I actually prefer taking the boat across the Bay of Naples. It's a relaxing ride, beautiful scenery and always seems like part of my Sorrento vacation. The down side is that the boats don't run all that frequently. So remind yourselves that you're on vacation and really don't have anywhere you HAVE to be. The pier has plenty of places to sit, relax and have something to eat and drink. Since you can book your train tickets in advance (for really great discounts by the way), check the boat schedule and see what you can do to coordinate the two! I'd give yourselves an hour in case of train delays and then catching a cab to the dock. Time difference between car and boat? The boat could be faster by a lot! There's heavy traffic and construction on the highways. I'd rather walk than take that awful train! Sorrento is beautiful! I spend at least a week there every year . . . same hotel, same room, same restaurants. I think it's becoming 'home.'

Probably train to Naples, then hire a driver service. Commuter train to Sorrento from Naples difficult with luggage. We drove to Naples ( airport) from Spello in Umbria and it was very easy, all on an autostrada, like an Interstate in US. No driving in Naples as you come to tne airport first. Then either take a dedicated bus that goes directly to Sorrento or have a driver meet you there to go to Sorrento. Or drive to Sorrento and drop off car. I don’t know if there are car agencies to return the car to in Sorrento but probably are. We stayed in Naples, then Capri, then Sorrento so our last two legs were by ferry.

Personally it is a drag to have to travel that long on one day.
Your best bet is to take the Sienna to Rome Direct Bus 3 hrs
And then Rome to Naples by train 1 hr
And then Naples to Sorrento using the Circumvesuviana Train this takes more or less 30min
