Any suggestions on traveling from Siena to Positano? We will have a car in Siena. I thought we should return the car after traveling in Siena/Tuscany....Take a train to Rome, Rome to Naples & then I don't know about getting to Positano.
After looking at the train schedule & amount of time for traveling by train, I thought maybe we should keep the car. Drive from Siena to Rome & then drop off the car...take the train from Rome to Naples....Help!
Get yourself to Florence and take the eurostar (2nd class, 1st class not worth the extra money) to Naples. Florence to Naples on the ES is about 3 hours. From the naples train station take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. The Circumvesuviana is a privately owned commuter train that runs between Sorrento and Naples. I would suggest staying in Sorrento, but if you are keen on heading to Positano, from Sorrento you will need to take a bus to Positano.
Dari,
My suggestion would be the same as the previous post. Either drop the car in Siena and take the SITA Bus to Florence, or drop the car in Florence (preferably outside the city so you don't have to travel through ZTL areas).
Travel from Florence to Naples via EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita is 3 hours. From there you can transfer to the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento.
I'd also recommend Sorrento for a "home base", as it's a convenient location for visiting Pompeii, Capri and other locations in that area. However, Positano is nice too (lots of hills - be prepared for some exercise!). If you're planning to visit Capri, travel from Positano is also very convenient (ticket offices are right at the docks).
Happy travels!
