We will be in Seravezza for an art workshop in August. We want to go from there to Verrana to stay a few days. Then we will fly back to NC from Malpensa. Any advice for the best way to get to Verrana?

Would you be refering to Varenna on Lake Como?
Or perhaps Vernazza in the Cinque Terre?

By train it is about 6 hours. Pietrasanta to La Spezia to Milan to Varenna-Esino. From Varenna to Malpensa it is a train back to Milan, then the Malpensa Express train to the airport. If you have an early flight, you might want to spend the night in Milan before departure.

We may rent a car and drive from Seravezza to Malpensa. Will my google maps gps work in Italy? Any suggestions on car rental?

I see on Google Maps that at least Sixt has a car rental near Massa Centro train station, but I don't consider the train schedule unreasonable. At certain times of day, like 11:30, you can do it with one less connection. Try www.trenitalia.com for a current schedule (not past June 11).
