My husband & I are heading to Rome this summer for 6 days. We want to take a day to head to the beach & just relax. But where should we go? I've heard so many conflicting reviews...Ostio Antica:great for touring but not a great beach; Ostio Lido or Sperlonga. I'm considering the latter. Any suggestions?
FWIW, Ostia Antica doesn't have a beach at all. It's inland now. (2000 years ago it was on the coast as ancient Rome's seaport, but not anymore.)
Ostia Lido (note the spelling - not Ostio), is the beach resort town very popular with middle-class Romans because of its easy access. However, the water quality is doubtful because of its location downcurrent from the wastewater coming out of the Tiber.
