Travel from Rome to santa maria de leuca

We would like tombs see the caves in santa maria de leuca, but hardly any time. Can I travel by overnight train from Rome? My thoughts, if possible Tues night, over night train from Rome to Lecce?? (Or w/e station I need) Spend Wednesday cave diving Wed night, take late overnight train back to Rome
Thurs, fly back to US on a 930 flight. Am I making this too difficult? Or is it really possible for a reasonable price? Thanks!!!!

Also look at taking a discount flight from Rome to Brindisi - rent a car at the airport and drive to Santa Maria de Leuca. We drove there last fall but didn't see the caves - the terrain is really interesting. Get a car with a GPS if you drive. To find discount flight see www.whichbudget.com. Note that Ryanair flies from Rome Ciampino rather than FCO. Your idea of visiting that region sounds great!

Thanks! That's very helpful. Ryanair has cheap flights going there, but since I literally have like 36 hours to do this, I'm trying to find overnight trains back.
My timeline is what I'm most concerned with. I can leave after 6pm a Tuesday, but need to be back in Rome by 630 am. Yikes! I want to make it work.

With that kind of time crunch I'd save this for another trip - enjoy Rome and explore Puglia later. If you take the overnight train you'll be exhausted when you arrive - I'm not sure about the availability of public transportation. Also, you're cutting it very close to your return trip home - if there were a rail strike or something else that delayed the train you might not make it. Could you schedule it for a day earlier than the day before your departure? Look at the cost, time involved, and expenditure of energy and decide if it's worth it to you! It might be just the adventure you'e looking for!
