My husband and I are currently in Tuscany and will go from there to Praiano in a week....we have a rental car, will turn in in Salerno and take bus to Praiano. My sister is flying into Rome later and coming to Praiano to stay with us. Trying to help her navigate the trip from Rome. Take train to Naples (worried about her navigating Naples) or Salerno? From there what buses? It looks like from Salerno you have to change buses in Amalfi. Is that correct. Thanks, as always for your input.
There a several travel options, but this is my personal "first choice":
Take the nonstop airporter train from Fiumicino airport to Roma Termini Station.
Take any high-speed train from Roma Termini to Salerno (preferably not requiring a change at Napoli Centrale).
Take the SITA bus right outside the Salerno Station to Amalfi.
Connect in Amalfi to the SITA bus bound for Sorrento, but get off at Praiano!!!
Because the bus trip from Salerno to Praiano takes more than 90 minutes, buy the UNICO COSTIERA 24-hr ticket for 6 Euros. It is sold at the newsstand inside the Salerno station. Otherwise, buy a 90-minute ticket (3 Euros) to reach Amalfi, plus a 45-minute ticket (2 Euros) for the onward connection to Praiano. You must punch the ticket when you first board the bus. The 24-hr. ticket only needs to be punched the very first time it's used.
There is also the possibility of saving some time by taking the ferry boat from Salerno Concordia Dock (400 yards from the station) to Amalfi (30 mins), then connecting to the SITA bus to Praiano. These boats usually stop running at the end of October. Look carefully at the limited schedules to see if you have a good connection from the train, because in some cases it's not worthwhile. Remember too that the boats don't operate in bad weather. The SITA bus is usually a safer bet (and buses run into the late evening).
There is also the alternative of connecting at Napoli Centrale, taking the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, and then connecting to the SITA bus to Praiano. I think this option is more complicated for a novice, and often will take longer than going through Salerno.
