Travel from Rome to CT to Tuscany

What is the best way to go to CT (Monterosso) and Tuscany (Siena) We are flying into and out of Rome so which should do first and how would we get there? Is Siena the best place to stay at while in Tuscany at a Farmhouse?

Agriturismo San Marciano is a wonderful option while in Siena. Beautiful old farmhouse, with a marvelous kitchen from which comes amazing breakfast not to mention the most spectacular homecooked dinner. Please eat the dinner at least twice while you are there! Rooms are beautiful!

Thanks! How about the travel? Should we go Rome-CT-Siena or
Rome-Siena-CT

From Rome-FCO, your starting point will be Rome. So whatever you do, you have a somewhat circle route as you will need to return to Rome. My first thought to consider is to make Rome your last stop as you should spend your last night in Rome before heading for the airport. If your flight is early, your hotel can easily arrange the very early morning taxi ride to your airline terminal (the Leonardo Express doesn't begin running until 05:50 last I looked ). That would mean that you go to the Rome Termini train station and head out from there. Now, will it be Siena or the CT? Hmmm! If Siena, there are three ways to get there. One is more expensive than the other. Way #1 is to go downstairs at Rome-Termini and take the metro 4 stops towards Rabbibi to the Rome-Tiburtina train station, go 200 meters to the bus station and take the SENA bus to Siena. Great ride and very cheap. The bus takes you right to the Siena city wall. By train, there are two ways. Way #2 is to take the train to Chiusi where you would change trains for Siena. The Siena train station is about a mile downhill from the city so you will most likely take a taxi to your hotel. Way #3 is to take the high-speed non-stop from Rome Termini to Florence and then transfer to a Regionale train to Siena. Or, Way #4 at the Florence train station, you walk 1,000' to the SITA bus station and take the non-stop SITA bus to Siena. You really do have choices here.

Now, if you want to go to the CT first, again, you begin at Rome Termini. From there, you can go west to the coast up directly up to the CT and avoid Florence (about 3.5hrs on the train) or take the high-speed non-stop to Florence and change to a Reginale train to the CT. Any rides on the high-speed will increase your travel costs. Some of your choices will take you through Florence. You can easily return to Rome from any of these choices by reversing the instructions above. Note that I didn't favor one way over another. It's really a circle trip and either way will work. If you go to the Siena first, there is a "backway" by bus and train to get to the CT without going back through Florence. But, I'll skip that information for now.
