We leave for Rome in two days and would like to visit the American Cemetery in the town of Nettuno just east of Anzio and 38 miles south of Rome. The cemetery website says that a train runs every hour from Rome to the city of Nettuno and then they suggest renting a taxi to cemetery. I would like to avoid taking a taxi. Any suggestions? Thank You. Steve.
Walk? Rent a car and use their excellent driving instructions?
It's not a long hike - but it's not the best scenery as you cut through town from the train station. Definitely carry a map or GPS. The cemetery is almost directly north of the train station. So I'd suggest a taxi if you take the train. We often rode to the cemetary on school field trips (via the school's touring buses each Memorial Day), or on our mototino. It's actually a fairly easy ride if you're open to renting a car. But I'm not sure I'd plan on walking... and then once you're out there and need to get back into town, you'll have to call for a taxi as they are scarce in that part of town. Or start walking back towards the train station... It's a smaller cemetery but beautiful and quite moving. As children of military parents, my wife and I try and visit each of the cemeteries in Europe when traveling.
Ron, Thank you for your reply. I also make a point to visit a war cemetery whenever I travel to Europe, I feel that it is my duty to pay my respects to the men & women whose last resting place is on foreign soil. The very least I can do. Steve
