Anyone know how to travel from Rome to Amaseno, about 1 hour south of Rome.
I looked into this last fall when we were planning our trip for October 2012. Don't know specific information, but think that there is a bus from Rome that travels to Amaseno. Other option would be to hire private car or rental car. We decided not to go because it wasn't easy to get to with the time we had. My grandparents came to USA from Amaseno, so I was disappointed not to go. I'm curious, because my grandparents settled in Chicago Heights. Do you know any Petrongelli's? I hope you get to go!
Regional Train from Roma Termini to the station called CASTRO-POFI-VALLECORSA, which serves the 3 towns by the same name.
Use www.trenitalia.com for train schedules. Once arrived at the station you proceed by bus (CO.TRA.L bus company) on the bus operating from Frosinone to Amaseno (via Ceccano and Castro dei Volsci). You could also go to Frosinone and catch the same bus from there.
Anyone taking the train from Roma Termini to Amaseno should get off at Frosinone. There are several daytime buses going to Amaseno. Unfortunately I got off at Castro dei Volsci where there are no daytime buses going to Amaseno. I did not know that at the time. I did not want to go to Castro because I know the risk of a small town stop. I went to Castro for the offer of a ride which was a No Show, and there I was alone under the hot sun.
After an hour or more a small bus came by and said there are no buses to Amaseno. He told me to board which I did and he drove me to a corner at the edge of Castro and told me to wait there which I did. Waited for another hour or more and it turned cloudy and began raining. I whipped out my classy RS raincoat and covered myself and my 2 luggage. Then a big bus drove by me but refused to stop. Maybe I looked like a gypsy or bag lady to him, who else would be out in the rain on that corner with 2 bags?
So I waited longer and eventually a road ranger polizia passed me, came back, stopped and asked me what I was doing on that corner. I said,"Sono Sandra _ _ _ _ _ _ di Chicago, vado ad Amaseno," with the same grin I acquired when I landed in Italy. Well, the polizia drove me to Amaseno, which became big talk in the town.
One day I walked down the hill to San Rocco Plaza and waited at the bus stop for a driver to give me the scoop on the buses. I talked to 2 drivers and both said the same thing, get off at Frosinone for daytime buses to Amaseno. At Castro stop, the first bus to Amaseno leaves Castro at 4 or 5 pm.
So there it is, direct from the field.
