We are traveling from Praiano to Buonconvento in Tuscany the middle of May 2018. It looks like a bus trip to Sorrento then train to Naples. Beyond that are there any suggestions?

I would rent a car in Sorrento and drive from there. Mostly freeway (at least from Castellammare to Chiusi).
You need a car in Buonconvento, it’s a small village in a rural area. What are you going to do without wheels? Hitchhike? Buses aren’t so frequent in rural areas.
If you’d rather not drive such a long distance on the freeway, maybe you could take a train from Naples to Chiusi (likely one change in Rome), then rent a car in Chiusi for the short remainder of the drive to Buonconvento.

If it were my trip, assuming you don’t want a car while you are in Praiano, on the day of departure I would take the bus to Sorrento, rent the car, then drive back to the hotel in Praiano to get the rest of the party and the luggage, then from there, I would drive to Buonconvento. From Praiano to Buonconvento plan at least 5 hours of driving, to which you must add pit stops along the freeway “area di servizio” (service/rest areas) for fuel, restroom, food (in the order you prefer). It’s almost 300 miles, but at least 50 miles are on slower curvy highways (the rest is 4-6 lane freeway).
