Travel from Pescara to Bari to Messina by Train

I am planning to travel to Italy next year potentially with a small group of friends. We will be in Abruzzo for several days with a tour. From Pescara, we'd like to travel to Bari and stay at the Grotta Palazzesse Hotel for a night or two. From there, we want to travel to Sicily.

From what I can read, it may be possible to take the train from Bari to Messina. Has anybody traveled this way? We could fly, but the travel would allow us to see the countryside. I would guess it takes quite some time to travel from Bari to Messina. We eventually want to get to Taormina first on Sicily.

Has anyone traveled any part of this route?

That is a long 12 hour journey.
First from Bari to Caserta, then from Caserta to Naples, then from Naples to Villa SG and from there a ferry to Messina.
Unfortunately also the air options may require a layover somewhere. I don't think you can fly from BRI to CTA non-stop anymore.
How about renting a car and driving? 5 hours at the wheel and you can be at the ferry dock in Villa SG.
