What are the advantages of taking train from Naples to Salerno and then bus to Praiano vs. switching to Circumvesuviana train, taking that to Sorrento and then bus to Praiano? Which method is recommended and why?

No specific advantage. Look at the timetable and see what work best for your time of travel. Consider however that, with only one exception, buses go from Salerno to Amalfi only. In Amalfi you will change to a another bus going from Amalfi to Sorrento. You will get off that bus approx half way at Praiano.
