We arrive at MXP at 8:45 pm September 8th. We will be staying at Hotel Bagliori near Milan stazione centrale. The hotel management tells us there is a shuttle bus that would drop us off at stazione centrale,or we could take a train from the airport getting off at stazione cadorna. I imagine by the time we deplane and get through customs, we won't be on our way out of the airport until 9:45ish. What do you veteran travelers recommend? Which would be faster? From either station, I imagine we will be so beat that we would want to cab it to the hotel. It doesn't appeal to me to be trying to find the hotel by foot in the dark that late. Safety of course is most important, but is either method ridiculously expensive compared to the other mode? Thanks!
Cynthia
MXP is about 25 miles northwest of the Stazione Centrale, travel time is about an hour from when you depart the airport on the shuttle or train. Now, the hotel, if it's the one I'm thinking of, is about 1/2 mile from the Stazione Centrale. During the day and if you weren't dragging all your luggage around in the middle of the night, it would be about a 10 or 15 minute walk. But late at night and with your luggage, you'll probably want to take a taxi from the Central Station to the hotel (if you like, you can give the taxi driver a little extra tip to compensate for the short taxi ride). You're going to want to verify all of this by consulting the online maps at Viamichelin or GoogleMaps.

I agree with Kent that you will want a cab from Milano Centrale to your hotel late at night; Save yourself some stress! However, you can take a train directly from MXP to Milano Centrale. Trenitalia now offers this service. It takes 48 minutes and there are departures (according to current schedule) at 21:03, 21:47, 22:03, 22:47. Cost is 7 to 11 euros. Closer to your trip, you can reconfirm teh times at Trenitalia's website. Be sure to plug in "Malpensa aeroporto" as your departure and "Milano centrale" as arrival. FWIW you can also take the Malpensa Express (train) to Cadorna, but if your hotel is closer to Centrale, why not take Trenitalia? Also, if you carry your bags on and do not have to wait for luggage, it won't take long to get out of the airport. I think we were landing to curb in <30 minutes.
