Can someone please help me? We are going to be in Munich for Oktoberfest in late Sept and we want to take our last 2-3 days in Europe to Rome. I was under the impression we could take the train possibly even the night train. I am having trouble figuring out how to do that? Some blogs are saying there is a scam website called Euro Rail?? I looked at S- bahn and it shows everything sold out? I am a little paniced because our flight is booked and leave from Rome (FCO). Thank you. Can anyone help us?? Thanks from Dallas TEXAS!

Try the bahn.de site. As far as eurorail, it's a reseller and you pay a markup for the same tickets you can buy yourself online. You can also take a low cost flight between the two cities. Donna
The one budget airline that flies non-stop between Munich and Rome is TUIfly. Are you willing to share a 4-bunk couchette with strangers? I don't know your travel date, but I checked the German Rail site for a day in late September and found that although the sleepers were sold out, there still were discount fare tickets available for bunks in a 4-person couchette on the CNL night train for the arbitrary date I chose.
Would an overnight train sharing a couchette be a little cramped? It almost takes away from the train experience?? Is there apossibility of getting a train cabin from a third party? Maybe the best bet is to fly and then allowing for more time in ROme? Flights cost about the same as first class cabin? Thoughts? Thanks for replies.
We want to leave Munich on Sunday 9/30. Thanks again!
Not sure what type of "train experience" you're looking for. I have never found overnight trains particularly relaxing or enjoyable. Most of the time they make numerous stops and you don't get much rest. If the prices are about the same I would fly. It will save you a lot of time which you can spend visiting the sites of Rome. Donna, I think you may be right. I am going to look into flights. As of now I found $581.00 for 2 from Munich to Rome. Is there any cheaper?
Thanks Again!! Any suggestions for a Hotel in Rome for a 3 night stay in a central location??
Getting to and from airports, checking in, and going through security take quite a bit of time out of a day, even if the flight itself is short. I'll put in a good word for the night train. You will have more daylight hours for sightseeing than you would if you fly and you will save the cost of a night in a hotel. (But I sleep well on trains, even in a reclining seat. Many people don't and are miserable.) CNL trains are the best night trains in Europe. All couchettes are the same size. The only difference is in how many bunks are pulled down. With six people and their luggage, space is very limited. I don't recommend it. Unless everyone has lots of luggage, it's not bad with four people. I just checked the German Rail site and found that the discount fare tickets are gone for the 30 September night train, but full fare tickets are still available for both 4- and 6-bunk couchettes. Bcause the German Rail site says that all sleeper cabins are sold out, I don't think trying to book tickets with a third party will work.
There are Sleeper Cabins available for 129 Eu if you leave Monday instead of Sunday. Extra day of beer drinking.
