Travel from Montepulciano to Positano

We are honeymooning in Italy next month - will be staying 4 nights in Montepulciano and then traveling down to Amalfi Coast, staying in Positano. We are renting a car for our stay in Tuscany but are planning on returning the car before we get to Positano because we feel we won't need it on the coast.

Looking for advice on the best way to get between Montepulciano and Positano. The two options I have come across are dropping off the car in Rome and taking the train to Naples, regional train to Sorrento and then ferry or SITA bus to Positano (which seems like a lot of steps!) versus driving to Sorrento and then taking the ferry or bus to Positano. The car rental place is on Corso Italia 261/B, looks like it is close to Marina Piccola, which is where I think we can take the ferry but I'm not sure about that. Can anyone tell me where we could pick up the bus to Positano in Sorrento? We will have all our luggage with us so hopefully would within walking distance from the car rental... are we able to bring luggage onto the SITA bus? Any other ideas for easier way to get from Montepulciano to Positano? Thanks!

From my personal experience I traveled by train from Rome to Salerno. In Salerno I picked up the most wonderful ferry (Travelmar is the name of the company if I remember correctly). Ferry is only a couple blocks from the train station very easy. I did it with my roller bag and I travel solo at 65 years old. Very inexpensive about 12 euro from Salerno to Positano. That ferry takes you on the most glorious wonderful trip you will ever have. That is the way to get to Positano...not bus and not thru Sorrento. Also, that same ferry will take you other places along the Amalfi coast for just a few euro. Just my opinion and from my experience, I would only do Amalfi and the fabulous town of Positano in this manner. Best wishes for a wonderful trip.

Various options depending on your preference:
1. Drive to Positano, check in hotel, then decide if to keep the car while there or return it to Sorrento (and back to Positano by bus).
2. Return the car in Chiusi (near Montepulciano). Then take the train(s) from Chiusi to Salerno, then the ferry from Salerno to Positano.
3. Drive to Salerno, return the car, then ferry from Salerno to Positano.

Your choice.
