Travel from Milan to Varenna,Lake Come?

Posted by ominecariver on 05/14/22 03:12 PM
Does anybody have any experience or advice about traveling from Milan to Varenna at Lake Como? According to RS literature it’s a “short” train ride. I plotted it on Google Maps and it shows about 2 hours and then 7 hours showing the same route. Not sure what to make of it?

We are joining the RS 17 day tour at Varenna on May 20, arriving at the hotel a day early.

Would like to see as much of Milan in the short time we will be there, one night, so need to figure out the train to Varenna.

Thanks fellow travelers.

Look at Rome 2 Rio. I did it a few years ago and remember it being no more than an hour and a half by regional train from Milano Centrale.

pollyanna48, if you go to the trenitalia.com website, you can see the entire schedule of this train, and even how much the ticket costs. Note that the rail station in Varenna is called Varenna-Esino.

We did it continuously from MSP jetlagged, and it wasn't hard. Know the stops before Varenna so you are ready to jump off when the train arrives there. Varenna is beautiful!

The Trenitalia website:

https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

Enter from the dropdowns:
From: Milano Centrale
To: Varenna-Esino

Enter date, desired time of departure (use military time; 5:00 PM is 17:00, etc.) and number of passengers. You'll see that there's a train every hour until 9:20 PM (21:20), priced about 6,80 euro pp. The journey takes abt, 1 hour, 4 minutes. Clicking the little "i' in the circle next to the train number will show you the stops it makes along the way so you can see the one before yours and so gather your things in prep to get off. You'll want to be ready to jump! :O). Oh, and you do not need to buy tickets in advance.

Thank you all for responding with good information. This is our first trip to Europe and have some inexperience anxieties. Once we get to Lake Como we should be in good hands with the Tick Steve’s tour guides.

We tend to use a private car .... Bellagio Taxi is our recommendation.

The train connection to Varenna-Esino is easy and the trip is about an hour. When you receive your final, complete itinerary and hotel list about a month before your trip there will be instructions on how to get to your first hotel,Varenna. This may include step by step details from the main train station. Rome2Rio is an excellent website where you can also find good info, as well as Seat61.com

Call me an anti-Rome2Rio, but the info provided by Kathy is direct from the train operator, and there is really no reason to go to 3rd party info consolidators, who, on occasions, can be wildly inaccurate.
