Trying to get from Messina, Italy to the Palermo airport for a 8:40am flight. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? We are thinking that we must stay in Palermo the night before the flight as we have heard the trains are not that reliable. Any suggestions would be amazing. We are traveling in June.

I always make a point to stay in my departure city the night prior to my flight.
Keep in mind that the train journey will take about 3+ hours from Messina to Palermo, then the shuttle bus to the airport takes around 50 minutes, and it runs every 30 minutes.
BTW, looking at Trenitalia.com, the first train from Messina departs at 4:55 AM and it arrives in Palermo at 8:00AM, so this would be too late to make your 8:40 flight.
Your best bet would be to spend the night in Palermo ; )
