travel from Matera to Salerno

Hello,

I'm having trouble finding / booking travel from Matera to Salerno for end of May 2023. Would prefer taking all train if possible. I believe I found some routes that contain bus/train combo but am unable to book anything online. Does anyone know if this is possible? would appreciate some guidance. thanks

saw that, but that is one of those tricky ones. believe it is a bus/train combo. i have no idea to book that, there is no option to!

I think the fastest way is a 3-hr Miccolis bus which is about €23. The fastest routing involving a train looks like a bus/ train combo and takes at least 4.5 hours.
You can buy the online bus ticket directly at www.BusBud.com

You can train the entire way but it would require you to travel through Bari which is in the wrong direction from Salerno.

If you really want to:
1) Take the narrow gauge train (privately run not Trenitalia) from Matera to Bari
2) Connect to Salerno from Bari changing either in Caserta or Taranto (or through Naples for multiple transfers) but the fastest looks like 4 hours and usually more

Taking only the train seems like a 5+ hour affair but is doable.

From a quick search the only bus combo I've found that seems bookable is Matera to Taranto by bus (1 hour) and Taranto to Salerno by train (3 hours 40) which isn't great.

Hopefully there are better options out there, but it obviously can be done.

Good luck,

Well, there are easier and faster ways than backtracking to Bari and changing two trains.

Take either a bus or a cab to "Ferrandina-Scalo Matera" station, then take one of the 4 direct trains to Salerno. Departures at 6:25 AM, 9:01 AM, 11:15 AM and 2:54 PM. You'll be in Salerno in less than 3 hours; the discounted fares start from 9.90 Euro, but note that the cheap tickets can't be refunded and changes are restricted.

To see the bus/train combo on trenitalia.com you must put Matera in the from field. Make a search also on italotreno.it/en , they used to run a similar service a few years ago.
