travel from Livorno to Arezzo

My husband and I are cruising to the Mediterranean and one of the ports is Livorno. Our grandson is in Arezzo for a college semester abroad and would like us to come see his school and the town. We dock at 10 am and leave at 10 pm. I am nervous about a train or bus getting there and back and not missing our ship. I have seen where we might be able to hire a car and driver to get us there and back and maybe even see a little of Florence before going back to the ship. Our grandson said the school and town tour will not take more than hours.

Any suggestions for us?

Thanks, Vicki

Even if you drove, that is two hours each way(!). Yes you could make it scenic, but that would add even more hours to the drive. I understand this may be important to your family, but I'd suggest he just meet you in Florence to enjoy the city with you. Florence is a much more manageable trip (less an an hour and a half ) for both of you by public transport.

I’d meet up in Florence. It’s 1h 15” from Livorno to Florence by train. Some are direct , some need a change, all are regional, so no need to purchase tickets far in advance. Or, alternatively you could meet in Pisa, which while it’s also a major tourist destination, it’s not as popular as Florence and won’t have as many people. You don’t say when you’re going, though.

It's well over 3 hours each way when everything is said and done. The train journey alone is at least 2.5 hours (plus getting from/to station and waiting time since there are only about one train per hour, all requiring a train change in Florence).

Driving won't get you there any faster, you still need well over 2 hours, plus you'd need to add the time necessary for the rental paperwork and pick up at the rental office (which is near, since the rental agencies are all at the cruise port).

It's doable of course, but your time in Arezzo wouldn't be much more than 2-3 hours. Obviously Florence couldn't be added to your plans.
