My husband and I are planning a cruise in Croatia from Split to Dubrovnik in Sept 2018. We want to plan a stay in Italy as well either before or after. We prefer the north-Milan, Bologna, Verona and are not sure the best way to get either from Italy to Split or Dubrovnik to Italy. If a non stop flight has to be from Rome we would rather include that as well rather than any layovers. Any suggestions are appreciated
Look for direct flights from Dubrovnik to Venice or Milan - or even Split to Venice or Milan. Try Google Flights
To view flight options, Google the Split and Dubrovnik airport websites and view the flight timetables. There are flights on multiple airlines directly to and from northern Italian cities such as Milan, Venice and Florence, but not every city is served every day of the week. Best flight selection would of course be from Rome, but that's out of your way. Another option is the overnight ferry from Ancona to Split (might also be a daytime catamaran - there once was), but ferries from Dubrovnik go to Bari which is also out of your way.
Thank you so much. Your info is both practical and useful. I'll start doing my homework!
I would suggest that you look into ground transportation, as it's cheaper than flying and also you get a chance to see more of the scenery en route.
At the suggestion of one of Rick Steves's Slovenian guides, in 2014 I took a shuttle service from Venice to Lake Bled in Slovenia. It's called Go Opti: https://www.goopti.com/en/
You can do either a shuttle or a private transfer. It was affordable, on time, clean and efficient. You can search their website--they do have service in Verona too.
Also, you can take ferries from Italy to Croatia. You can do a search for those. They run frequently during the summer, so you'd have to check about September, but it's worth looking into.
Have a wonderful trip. Sretan Put! (Happy travels in Croatian)
We took ferry from Ancona to Croatia last September. Stayed on island off the coast. Great option.
We have flown twice on Croatia Air nonstop from Rome to Dubrovnik. But at the time, they did not have daily service.
Besides Croatia Airlines (which I have flown before too and has direct service between Dubrovnik and Venice), another airline called Volotea also offers direct service between Dubrovnik and Venice for a decent price - even as cheap as $80 USD in this September 2017. But, they too don't fly every day. I'd certainly prefer to fly than to take a 9+ hour car service from Dubrovnik to Venice which can't be cheap, either.
The ferry would be a fun option, too. I've never taken the ferry there but have taken other overnight ferries. But it does add time to the schedule; if the destination is northern Italy, flying direct if possible is obviously a lot faster than an overnight ferry and a train ride up to northern Italy.
