Travel from Florence to the Positano and back to Rome

We want to fly into Rome, take the train to Florence and then visit Poitano before heading to Rome and back home. Any suggestions for the amount of time to spend in each city?

How does anyone answer that? How much time do you have? We have spent nearly a month in Rome over the past years and that is not enough. If you want a quick hit, an overview, little bit of a drive by, then plan on three nights each in Florence and Positano with five nights for Rome. That should give you a decent taste and set you up well for your return visits. If you have more time then I would add a night each to Florence and Positano and two nights in Rome in that ratio. And remember the days you arrive and departure are lost days.

Time available is key, but also: What do you hope to do during your time in Positano? Do you just want to relax in pretty surroundings, or do you want to visit other places along the Amalfi Coast? What about Capri? Pompeii?

Florence: 3 nights (if planning day trips from Florence, add one night for each day trip)
Sorrento Peninsula/Amalfi Coast area: 4 nights min, 5 better
Rome: 4 nights
