Travel from Florence to Rome, via Orvieto

We're planning to travel from Florence to Rome and would like to stop in Orvieto and visit a nearby winery before going on to Rome. Does anyone know whether we'd be able to find transportation to a winery from Orvieto if we're traveling by train? Or will we need to have a car for this leg of the trip? Some say that driving in Italy can be a little dicey, but is a drive from Florence to Rome doable?

Orvieto is right on the rail line between Florence and Rome, so really, it is only a matter of local transportation. I am sure that a taxi would get you where you need to go, with the total cost still being much less than renting a car for the trip.

Not sure about getting to the winery, but train from Florence to Rome with a stop at Orvieto is very easy--we did it in reverse. I have 2 suggestions depending on what else you have planned.

If you already have a car planned (say, for driving in Tuscany) then I would keep it long enough to drive to the winery and return it in Orvieto, then take the train to Rome from there.

Otherwise, I would do as Paul suggests and take the train, hiring a taxi or local guide to get you out to the winery if necessary. Orvieto does have a bus service that connects to other locations, which might get you close as well. If you could, I'd contact the winery and see what they suggest.
