Travel from Florence to Monticchiello/Montepulciano and village visit suggestions

Next month spending 4 nights in Florence and then heading south for 5 days based out of Monticchiello; I have a car rental set up in Florence but was told better to take train out of Florence and get rental car in the area of Monticchiello/Montepulciano; I heard it is tough driving out of Florence; if better to take train what is the best station to arrive in the region? Also, any village suggestions and winerys? Thanks

Hard to get out of Florence? Why?
No reason to jump on a train and subject yourself to extra hassle.
I can provide easy to follow directions from your rental pick up.

I have the same question so would appreciate your advice Roberto. I've heard the 222 route was the most scenic and also that pick up at the Florence airport was easier. Many thanks in advance.

Roberto, we too are picking up a car in Florence at the end of our stay on 9/25 at the Hertz on Via Borgo Ognissanti 137 to head out to Tuscany. I am hoping (praying) it is an easy jump onto the highway so we can avoid the dreaded ZTL. Can you please let us know the easiest way. Thanks!

I would like to know as well, please. We have been trying to figure out best route from the train station, avoiding the dreaded ZTL's , to get to Impruneta.

Also, we will be picking up our son at the train station a few days later. Can you suggest a hassle free meeting place, so that we can get in and out easily, again avoiding the ZTL zones?

Many thanks.

We picked up our rental car at the Hertz San Sovino location. It is outside the ZTL and a short tram ride from the SMN train station, the San Sovino stop. The tram stops almost directly in front of the Hertz location. From there it was very easy to navigate to the Chianti area.
