My sister and I want to travel to Cinque Terre by train instead of taking a group day tour. This will be our first time with Italian trains. Any advice ??

its no trouble at all. Go to the station, use the automated kiosks (they have an english menu, just select the british flag at the start) to buy a ticket. Look up the times on the trenitalia site before your trip so you know when to go to the station. If you're already in Florence, buy your ticket ahead of time.
