Travel from FCO to Venice

Hi All,

Traveling from ORD/Chicago --> FCO in late May and arriving at 9 am with one other person. Once we land in Rome, we would like to go straight to Venice by train. We will be carrying-on luggage to avoid baggage collection and try to expedite time at the airport. My question is, should we book the ticket from FCO --> Venice at 11 AM or is that cutting it too close? What is the likelihood of this train selling out (i.e. should I buy it now)?

If 2 hours isn't enough time, we would probably take the Leonardo Express to Termini and then take a train from Termini --> Venice. Should I buy those tickets now, or would it be okay to buy those at Termini? Would there be long lines/would the tickets be sold out?

I would love to hear about these two options regarding affordability too. Thank you!

Wait til you get to FCO to buy tickets to Venice the flight will be delayed and so you will lose money booking this train in advance. Or if you like to gamble buy the tickets especially if the cost is something you can stomach losing.

Otherwise I would book a ticket in advance only for a 1 pm from Termini especially if the price was right

We all have gambled this way when it is a deal

Or try buying it advance while in the air if you have a good WiFi connection.
There is an app mentioned below for that

Yeah, I did exactly this (thought it was 10+ years ago now - yikes!) and just waited until I got to Rome Termini and bought the next ticket to Venice at full price instead of gambling on the arrival time of my flight and time to get out of the airport. Today, if timing was tight, I might buy it from my phone when I landed at FCO (or at least after I got through immigration). Get the Trenit app if you have an Android phone - good for real-time delay and platform info, too. Apple users may have to find the Trenit app in a non-US app store.

The direct Fco-Venice train leaves at 11:08.

If you miss the direct train, you can get a through ticket to Venice (changing either at Termini or at Tiburtina) at the airport station; there is no need to use the ticket machines twice or to make 2 queues at 2 counters.

Full price tickets are wasted 1 hour after the departure of the booked train. There is no reason for trains to sell out in late May.

Trains from Termini to Venezia SL can sell out. That only means that you have to kill an hour until the next train, so it is not such a big deal.
