Hello everyone. My husband and I are visiting Italy in May/June 2017. We have five nights booked in Venice Rome and Florence, as well as two nights in Corniglia. We are travelling by train and we are ending our vacation by staying with family residing near Annecy. What is our best option for this leg of our journey? Genoa to Milan or Tourin? Florence to Milan? How far ahead of time should we purchase our train ticket? We would like to manage this in one travel day. Any suggestion or experience would be appreciated.
Hello,
My name is Dario.
What I suggest is to plan a train itinerary like this:
1) corniglia - Genova (or La Spezia, depending on departure time) - Torino Porta Susa
2) Torino Porta Susa - Chambery - Annecy
Leg #1 can be planned and booked on Trenitalia website, while #2 on Voyages Sncf.
It will be a long trip, with several train changes, but not impossible.
Tickets can be book 2/3 months before, not sure if all tickets will be electronic, regionals could be paper tkts, to be purchased on site.
Bye!!
Thank you. You confirmed our tentative plans. Our main concern is making the train from Turin to Annecy as it appears they run infrequently; especially Friday afternoons. At worst, we may have to spend an evening in Turin; one more beautiful place to experience.
That's correct that only a few trains per day cross the border from Torino to France and these are the reserved TGV trains that depart from Milano Garibaldi station, not from Milano Centrale. Other connection options cross some of Switzerland first. To make the whole trip from Corniglia in one day, you must depart no later than 10:30. How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it (full schedules but not ticket sales).
Spending one more night in Turin is a great idea, imho is the best city in Italy (even two, if possible). Never been in Turin? Nust ask for suggestions 😉 I live here
Ciao
Dario
