Travel from Como to Milan Malpensa Airport

We have a flight leaving the Milan Malpensa Airport at 11:40 am. Unfortunately there are no trains from Como that allow us to reach the airport in time for our flight. I found a site for a bus service but it is in Italian and I cannot navigate it because I do not speak Italian. I would appreciate any suggestions for how to make this leg of our trip. Thanks, DRM

The Trenitalia website shows trains departing from Como San Giovanni before 5am. You could easily be at the airport by 8am. Are you staying somewhere other than the town of Como?

You could also arrange for a private car transfer, or spend the last night in Milano.

drm,

Could you clarify if you're staying in the city of Como or somewhere else along the lake? Also, where are you looking for train information?

Using Como Nord Lago as the departure point, there are numerous transportation solutions to Malpensa beginning at 05:06, with travel times as short as 57 minutes (details will vary from other stations in Como).

We are staying in Laglio and believe it will be easier to leave from Como to get to Milan Malpensa Airport. I could not find a train out of Como that got us to Milano Centrale in time to get to the airport. As a result, we are looking for a bus or other service to get us there. Thanks, DRM

Ken: I tried Trenitalia from the Como to Milan and the earliest departure was after 10. Are there other transportation options besides the train? We have no problem with that but how do we find them? Thanks, DRM

Drm,
You can take a bus from Laglio to Como then a Regionale train from Como Nord Lago train station (across the street from the bus station) to Saronno then Malpensa Express train to airport.

Check this website for bus schedules:http://www.asfautolinee.it/en/home

  • Click on 'Extraurban timetables' which will take you to the list of timetables,
  • Then click on 'Orario Completo LAGO' (top of list) to download timetables (pdf)

You will need to take bus C10/C20-- see page 14: http://www.asfautolinee.it/Portals/5/Documents/Orari/I1213/lago/LAGO-invernale.pdf

  1. There is a bus departing from Laglio - Piazza Riva Silvio @ 7:00am & arrives at Como - Stazione Autolinee (bus station) at 7:30am
  2. You can then take the train from Como Nord Lago at 7:46am & arrive in SARONNO @ 8:26 AM
  3. You will then take the 'Malpensa Express' train departing Saronno at 8:46am, arriving at MXP at 9:02am

(There is an earlier bus at 6:03am if you want to get to the airport at 8am)

Please keep in mind that bus schedule (link above) is effective September 12, 2014 through June8, 2015.

You may need these abbreviated codes for the bus schedule:

  • Fer6 = workdays including Saturday
  • Scol = school days

Check train schedules here:http://www.trenord.it/en/timetable/timetable.aspx (I chose June 4 as example)

Hope this helps you!

EDIT: Here is a map showing you bus station & Como Nord Lago train station: http://tinyurl.com/Como-bus-train-station

Send me a PM if you need more information. We were actually at both the bus & train stations in Como in October when we took a day trip there.

Drm,

You're welcome!
Another option, as Zoe mentioned, is to spend the night before your flight in Milan.

If you want to stay in Milan, you should look for a hotel near the Cadorna Station (Castello Sforzesco area), it's closer to the historical center and trains from Cadorna to the airport are faster than from Milano Centrale ( 30 mins. vs 52 mins.)

The 'Malpensa Express' train travels from Cadorna to MXP every 30 minutes.

We stayed at hotel Palazzo delle Stelline which is very close to the Cadorna Train Station, the Duomo & Sforzesco Castle.

This is the hotel's website:http://www.hotelpalazzostelline.it/en/hotel-3-stars-milan-italy/green-oasis-heart-milan-0

Have a wonderful trip!

Edit: Check train schedules here for 'Malpensa Express':http://www.trenord.it/EN/

You will type:

  • From: Milano Nord Cadorna
  • To: Malpensa Aeroporto

Staying that far away from your departing airport is NOT a cogent strategy. Any number of transportation problems could occur to delay your arrival at the airport. Someone above suggested staying your last night in Milan and that is the protocol we would follow.

We always stay at the Hotel Berna on Via Napo Torriano, which is about 400 meters from the Stazione Centrale. You could either take the train or Milan Shuttle bus to Malpensa. We frequently use this strategy when we depart from Malpensa.

Buon viaggio,
