We are getting off a cruise ship and planning to travel (by train, most likely) straight to Florence. After that we want to take the train back to Rome. Any advice, recommendations, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Go to www.trenitalia.com and put in Civataveccia to Firenze S. M. Novella. There are no direct trains. Fastest way is likely to be to Roma Termini, then change to a train to Firenze.
