Hello, My partner and I are going to be travelling from Bari Italy, to Salerno, Italy in September. I cannot for the life of me find a train that gets us there at a reasonable hour even though it is only a few hours away. We need to be there at a reasonable time as we are continuing from there to Amalfi where we will still need to check into a hotel. Does anyone have any bus or rail options that I have not been able to find? At this point it looks like I may have to rent a car and given this is my first time in Italy I would rather not have to if I can. Thanks in advance for the advice! Thanks,
Melissa
Melissa, have you looked at the fast train from Bari to Naples? Then you could take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and transfer to a bus to Amalfi. I learned the hard way that traveling across different regions in Italy (especially the South)in one day can be challenging. I don't know how long the ride is from Bari to Naples, but there are many departures each day. The ride from Naples to Sorrento is a little over an hour, the bus to Amalfi is about the same. Departures for both are about every 30 minutes.
September schedules may not be posted yet. Try a pretend for date next week-be sure to choose Bari Centrale as the start. Also, select Tutti I Treni not just the Frecci trains. Linda
Thanks for the tips! It looks like trains leaving Bari to Naples are all leaving in the late afternoon which unfortunately doesn't work for us. But buses (Marina Autolinee) seems to have early morning departures that take three hours to Naples. From there it looks like there are a few options to get us to Amalfi. I only wish Marina Autolinee had an English translation so I could get more info. Looks like it may be an adventure when we are there! Thanks again everyone.
If you take a bus into Naples, then you can take the fast train to Salerno. I've already booked my train ticket for this train ride. It's only 30 mins between Naples and Salerno. So if you figure it's 3 hours by bus from Bari to Naples, then you can do the whole trip (Bari, Naples, Salerno) in less than 4 hours.
A good option for earlier arrival would be high-speed train from Bari to Caserta, local train to Naples, train to Salerno and bus to Amalfi. Once you get to Caserta, all the other trains and the bus run fairly frequently (at least hourly). It's less complicated than it sounds. Edit: Also, Marino runs a bus from Bari directly to Naples (but not to Salerno). There's a 7:30am bus that arrives 10:30am. Departure and arrival are near the central train stations. Website is www.marinobus.it, but didn't see an english option.
It is possible in the morning by train to Napoli but you will be at Naploi P Garibaldi, just a few minutes walk away. Adjust the transfer time Caserta dep 10:20 R 24371 R 24372 Regionalzug 2nd class only Runs as R 24371 up to Napoli Gianturco, then as R 24372 Napoli Piazza Garibaldi arr 10:59
walk 5 min. Napoli Centrale You could be in Salerno by 1144.
The trains start from Bari Centrale to Salerno at 5:15 AM-there are changes at different towns but this seems to be the most direct way to go-shortest trip is 5 hours and 15 minutes. Linda
and then you can take a ferry from Salerno to Amalfi! I mean, at least that's more fun :)
Thanks everyone for the awesome tips! I was getting nervous about making this trip in a day but your advice makes it totally possible. And yes Katherine, I agree a ferry is away more fun if we can make that work! Plus I hear people tend to get motion sick on the bus to Amalfi because of the windy roads so I would much prefer a ferry.
