We will be renting a car for our time in Alba (Piedmont), but do not want to have a car in CT. Looking for best travel from Alba to Monterosso for convenience and time saving. Wondering if anyone has returned a car in Genoa. Or if it would be best to return the car in Alba and train from there. In the past we have struggled finding car return locations in large cities. Trying to eliminate travel stress.
Also, any suggestions for Alba wine touring and truffle experiences are appreciated.
The easiest is to return the car in La Spezia where there are offices for Avis/Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Maggiore and perhaps other smaller companies. La Spezia is way easier to drive in than Genoa - Hertz and Europcar are easy to reach and while Avis is surrounded by a ZTL, you can still drive to it. There's a La Spezia rental map in this article (double check the info is still current): https://www.apathtolunch.com/2015/11/where-to-rent-car-from-cinque-terre-la.html
I often use Google Street View to check out addresses like an urban car rental address in advance - it gives your brain a headstart in recognizing the place.
Watch the open hours - at least one is closed on Saturday, several are open only in the morning Saturday, all are closed Sunday.
You can also keep the car while you are in Monterosso. There are parking lots. But that decision will largely depend on your itinerary after the Cinque Terre. If you think you might use a car afterwards, then keep it, otherwise return it in La Spezia (or Genoa if it is a weekend when the La Spezia locations are closed).
