Travel from Aix-en-Provence to Torino, Italy

In reviewing all of our travel options for this route, it appears that taking a train is the most efficient way to travel from Aix to Torino, but the route is very long. We would prefer to drive, but we were told that a fee can be added onto a rental if returning the car in another country. I would love to hear suggestions from other travelers who have traveled from Provence to Torino. Thank you.

Train is the way to go. If you can stand a 6:25AM departure, according to the current schedule it is a 6 hour trip with one change at Lyon. Next best is a 9:25 departure with 2 changes taking almost 7 hours.

A train day is nice. Relax, enjoy the countryside, take a nap, and be refreshed when you arrive at your destination versus flying or driving which both exhaust me.

Best research site is Trainline.eu.

You can check with AutoEurope or Kemwel to see what the fees would be to rent a car in Aix-en-Provence and return it in Torino. There will definitely be a drop charge for returning it in a different country; on this board I've seen quotes from €50 to €600 (not a type - six hundred euros). If the price is acceptable to you, ViaMichelin shows the drive as taking about 5 hours and costing €57.89 in gas and tolls. Remember that drive time is merely an estimate (many report that the actual drive times are longer), and does not allot any time for meals, bathroom breaks, etc.

There seem to be no nonstop flights between Marseille airport and Torino airport, so flying would take far longer than the train or driving.
