Going to Italy in November. Do you think driving in the area of Venice and Florence, Tuscany and then taking a train to Rome. My grandaughter is 17 and the other is 11 we want to really do things ourselves. What do you think of staying outside of Rome. Would it be cheaper?
Ginny, just got back from Italy and we did exactly what you plan on doing. It was great driving around. We stayed on the outskirts of Venice & Florence and took public transportation into the cities. Having the car, we were able to drive around the hill towns at our convenience. We stayed in Rome, but left the car in Orvieto. You could stay in Orvieto and commute (1 hr) into Rome daily (33 euros, one way, 2nd class for 3), however, you would lose time commuting. Maybe someone knows of a town closer to the city . We stayed in a Tb room at Hotel Valentino in Orvieto for 100 euros. Loved Orvieto. Have fun.
It could be cheaper, of course, but there's a huge amount of charm in Rome at night - the fountains, the piazzas. It would be a shame to miss that.
