Travel Etiquette

Tomorrow is the last day of my family's fantastic two week trip to Italy. Thanks to a lot of preparation and the resources on this forum and from Rick Steves and his books, we have had a trip full of memories to last a lifetime. We have also had many unexpected opportunities to learn life lessons on this trip. One thing we have discussed with our children a lot is the joy found in travel for the sake of learning more about our world and the lives of people who live other places. I have always used the Rick Steves guide books because he does such a good job of encouraging this.

After Roberto's post about the rude Americans today, I was catching up on a little NY Times reading during our "siesta" break this afternoon and came across the article below. Our family has witnessed too much of this - not the "drunk tours" so much as the extremely self-centered nature of so many travelers these days. As the article says, these travelers believe that since they paid for their vacations, they are entitled to do as they please wherever they are. This was perfectly illustrated many times over our two weeks, including in the Vatican Museum by a group of women with selfie sticks and giant dark sunglasses, bashing other tourists (including my children and I) repeatedly in the head so they could get the perfect poses of themselves in front of Michaelangelo's Pieta.

The readers of this forum are probably not the ones who need to read this article - unfortunately, I doubt the worst offenders read much of anything, including guide books or newspapers. But I think that many here will find this interesting:

Full trip report coming soon! One last day in lovely Venice . . . . .

janet,

I was aware of many of the incidents described in that article, and especially disappointed that some of my fellow Canadians were involved in the incident in Borneo. The authorities felt that their "disrespect" on the mountain caused an earthquake to occur. As far as I'm concerned, they got off lucky, as they could have spent several years in a miserable prison.

I've also seen examples of this, both here at home and when travelling. I wish I knew why society has become like this?

I wonder if a lot of this youthful immaturity. I did some stupid things in my youth as well, being disrespectful was NOT one of them. Being in my 60's now, I have always been treated respectfully while traveling overseas and I return it in kind. No "Ugly American" here ... at least not in attitude.

Speechless.

So...now the Queen's Guard needs a guard? Too bad someone wasn't there to issue an immediate fine. I've since discovered waaaay too many YouTube videos of people having 'fun' with these guards.

Seriously, People?!?

I can already see that on my next European visit, I'm gonna have an unpleasant run-in with a selfie stick...or worse...and it's gonna end poorly for at least one of us. I may need bail money...

Yes - probably some youthful immaturity. And all nationalities seem to be represented in the rude behaviors. We have also experienced a lot of lovely behavior. At least there has been plenty of clear contrasts for my children to see - they know what kind of travelers they want to be know (the good kind!).
We have noticed a lot of school tours - generally American High School aged kids traveling with chaperones - and they have been very polite! There is hope.

I suppose the good news, if there is any, is that it's not restricted to any one nationality. It just seems like more people everywhere are selfish and self-centered in all aspects of their lives, including tourism. They just want to do what they want, when they want it, and don't care about others because nothing in their lives is more important then them.

I guess selfie sticks prove that if you aren't in the picture, you weren't really there, it didn't really happen and worst of all, you don't exist.

Not youthful immaturity, as if this were a rite of passage. It's criminal behavior in some cases, rudeness in others. Desecrating artwork and monuments has nothing to do with age, it's criminal.

Perhaps the forum should start a bail fund for Eileen and me.

Eileen, will be looking for the bail fund email -- next May, right?

And, when you shop for a bail bondsman, look for the guy who's slogan is "Reuniting Families" - an actual advertisement.

"Reuniting families" - not funny, but......LOL! Hey, it's memorable. And that's the point of advertising.

Yes, Laura, next May. So that gives everyone 10 months to save - just throw your change in a Bail jar. And look for the post next May requesting your kind donations ;-)

I hope Zoe doesn't snore...

I think selfie sticks are not only weapons, they dispense with the charm of people helping each other out to get snapshots as they travel.
