I will be staying in Selva Val Gardena,Dolomites and have a flight departing from Rome back to the U.S. I would like to make the trip in one day and am willing to take a flight if necessary. Or would it be more practical to spend a night in Verona, for instance? Suggestions?

There is a direct Eurostar train from Bolzano to Roma Termini that leaves bolzano around 4 pm and get sto Rome about 10 pm. That would be your best bet. You can probably take a bus from Val Gardena to Bolzano. There are other connections but this one appears to be the only direct route. I think 2nd class was around 65 euros.
