Travel by train from Rome to Venice to Salzburg, back to rome in 5 days

I'm new to train travel in Europe. Should I use the Italiarail to go from Rome to Venice or use /Eurail for all three trips?

Neither Italiarail nor Eurail run trains. These are travel agents.

There are two railway companies operating on that route. This are their websites:
Trenitalia: www.trenitalia.com
Italo: www.italotreno.it

Venice to Salzburg you can book with Trenitalia, or with ÖBB: www.oebb.at, the Austrian railways.

Salsburg to Rome: Book again with ÖBB.

However, 5 days is not enough for the trip that you have in mind. With five days you can just being to scratch what Rome has to offer, so I would just stay there...

Use the official train site- (ItaliaRail and "eurail" are third party resellers- they don't run trains).

you can book the whole trip on
https://www.trenitalia.com/content/tcom/en.html

Use the Italian station names
Roma Termini
Venezia Santa Lucia

Can't imagine how you do all this in 5 days.
The train trip from Venice to Salzburg will take almost 8 hours- that's 1 day gone out of your 5.
The trip from Rome to Venice will take 4 hours- another half day gone.
Return to Rome from Salzburg is about 12 hours- another day gone

Italiarail is is a 3rd party ticket seller. They are not a railway. Same with Eurail- they just sell multi-day train passes. It's unlikely that a Eurail pass would save any money compared to advance purchase directly from the rail company, but you will have to do the math yourself. If you are new go European train travel, then read up on it on the Man in Seat 61 website. https://www.seat61.com/

Trenitalia and Italotreno are the 2 Italian train companies. Buy your tickets directly from one of them. Italo doesn't go to Salzburg.
The return trip from Salzburg to Rome during the day is very long -12/13 hours. You might consider taking the Nightjet train and getting a sleeper compartment for the night. Or perhaps train to Munich and fly to Rome.

But considering that you will use 2 whole days just getting to and from Salzburg, I'd recommend saving that city for another trip.

Is visiting Rome included in the 5 days? Or just leave and return to it, sort of like a multi-day day trip?

Disregarding the extensive train travel, do you actually want to see any of Venice and Salzburg or just tag or instagram them to say you were there? If you want to actually see them they each deserve at least 3 nights and 2 full days each, and you don't seem to have that much time.

I know you have been around the Forums for several years, but I'm afraid that your question brings up more questions than we can answer without a bit more detail. Can you help us help you?

Others have said to use the actual train companies - they are right; others have said how very long the train travel will be.

Do you want to visit the destinations or pass through?

I will be staying in Rome for 4 days before this trip. I wanted to travel by train to Venice for a 2 day visit, then travel by train from Venice to Salzburg for a 2 day visit, then back to Rome from Salzurg.

Wasn't sure of the best rains to take and when?

A 2 day visit gives you just 1.5 days in that location.
The train trip from Venice to Salzburg will take 6 hours, so you really only have 1 full day and a few evening hours in Salzburg.

Do you have to go back to Rome? Is that for a flight home? If so- could you change and fly out of Munich? would save you that long 12 hour train ride (and another lost day).
I suggest you skip Salzburg and just visit Rome and Venice. Venice should get a minimum of 3 nights. Rome can always use more nights.

We don't know your dates so we can't tell you which trains to book.
Book all your tickets on the Trenitaia site linked above.

If you are feeling adventurous, you could take a night train to Salzburg, and return to Rome with a night train.
The direct night train from Venice to Salzburg is not very useful as it arrives in Salzburg at 3 am. There is another night train you can get after a short local train to Padua. That goes to Shwarzach-St Veit, then you take a local train to Salzburg, getting there at a little past 7 am. Repeat that 2 days later and get a night train to Rome from Schwarzach-St Veit.

Like I said, feeling adventurous and a sound sleeper and you could make it happen.

Thank you for the great advice! The train to Munich from Salzburg, then fly from Munich to Rome is a great option. Both are inexpensive compared to 12 hrs on a train.

My next questions are:
1. Can I arrange transportion to the hotel from the train station in both Venice and Salzburg? Any recomendations?

  1. Hotel sugestions in Venice and Salzburg?

I'm extending my trip by two days.

My suggestion assumed you were flying home to US from Munich.

Not sure your plan will really save much time
You’ll need to be at Munich airport 2 hours preflight so make sure train will get you there on time
Then you’ll need to get from Rome airport back into the center
Make sure you are adding up all costs and time

Do you need to go back to Rome?

There should be taxis outside Salzburg train station

Venice- you can walk or take the vaporetto or hire a water taxi-depends where your hotel is

I suggest you do some research on how to get around in Venice
There are many posts here about this topic
A forum search will bring them up

Thanks, I need to go to Rome for a cruise. I will be staying close to the cruise port.

Thanks for the advice about timing. I will take an early train out of Salzburg to Munich.

Ground transportation is my biggest chore right now. I'm traveling with someone who has limited mobility.

Limited mobility is a potential issue in Venice. When you want to cross one of the small canals, you have to use a bridge. There are always steps involved. Can your travel companion manage steps? If not, you need to choose a hotel close to a vaporetto stop with no bridges to traverse, and you'll need to check all your planned sightseeing targets ahead of time to be sure they, too, are accessible.

Taking water taxis everywhere would be extremely expensive; they aren't priced like land taxis.

So as I understand it, you're going to be in Rome for 4 days at the beginning and some days at the end, traveling with someone with limited mobility but you want to go to Venice & Salzburg for 4 days (which as others have said, isn't really 4 days, it's 1.5 days in Venice & who knows once you get to Salzburg, let's guess only one night. To put it into perspective, you're spending almost TWO days to get to & from Salzburg in order to spend one night there.

Assuming this is correct, add a few days to Venice or stop in Florence, which is a magical place and much much easier than Venice with limited mobility. Skip Salzburg, it's just too much, says someone who loves Austria. BTW have you looked closely at how to navigate train stations with someone with limited mobility? I'm sure it's possible, but may take extra time, something you really don't have.

Can you reverse the order ? Fly Rome to Munich and then go by train back ?

Thank you all for your great advice! I have decided to fly from Rome (after 5 nights in Rome) to Munich and then take the train to Salzburg for 2 nights. I know it's not a lot of time but, there will be a lot of snow most likely, so just a bus tour and a small amount of signtseeing will be enough for now.

We will take the train from Salzburg to Venice and spend 3 nights, then a train back to Rome. I have allowed a day in between each leg of the trip for travel, we don't have to want to rush.

My next questions are about all of the transfers. My traveling companion has limited mobility, but she can walk some steps and inclines.

What are my best options for these:

Airport transfers to and from Rome -
Airport transfer in Munich to the train -
Train transfer to Hotel in Salzburg and then transfer from Salzburg to the train - Or the best place to stay in Salzburg that might be near a train station.
Train transfer and hotel recomendation for Venice -
Train transfer from Rome to Cruise terminal -

I know it's a lot, thanks for all of your help. As you can see, I don't want to leave anything until the last minute.

Airport transfers to and from Rome -
Walk out side the terminal to the official taxi rank. Get in line. It is a flat fee 50 euros. If you are using a credit card be sure to let driver know- or have cash ready and your hotel address on a piece of paper to hand to him.

Airport transfer in Munich to the train -
get taxi outside the airport- not sure if there is a fixed rate- ask this question in Germany forum

Train transfer to Hotel in Salzburg and then transfer fromSalzburg to the train - Or the best place to stay in Salzburg that might be near a train station.
Taxi from station to your hotel and vice versa- again ask in Austria forum

Train transfer and hotel recomendation for Venice -
Vaporetto- get a length of stay pass- or private water taxi- depends where your hotel is.
Recommendation- Hotel Ala- there are no steps or bridges, it's at a vaporetto stop- do a search here for Hotel Ala- it is often recommended.

Train transfer from Rome to Cruise terminal -

I will let others address this- what is the timing on this day?- I'd probably want to be IN Rome the night before your cruise leaves... just in case.
My advice is to check with your cruise company

Why take an expensive taxi when there is a train (S-Bahn) into Munich. Now there is currently replacement bus for this route until November 13, but from then on it will be running. If you are traveling straight to Salzburg, a Bayern Ticket will get you all the way Salzburg Hbf after a train change in Munich Ost or Hbf. 27 EUR for 1 person, or 36 EUR for 2 people. Travel after 9 am week days or anytime weekends. Connect to Salzburg must be by regional train.

Sam-
As I posted OP would be better to post her Salzburg/Munich questions in the appropriate forums

I have been to both locations but not familiar with transit options as it’s been 7 years

I was trying to keep in mind her travel partner’s limited mobility.
