Travel by train between Rome, Florence, CT and Venice

Which makes more sense Rome - Florence - CT - Venice or Rome - CT - Florence - Venice?
All travel by train.

I would do the first choice, The trip to CT from Rome is fairly long, we did it in reverse a few years ago and I believe it was about 4- 5 hours. I think taking shorter trips will be doable. Now Venice back to Rome will be very long.

The second one is much more efficient. Only one long travel day.

I was leaning towards the second. To me it seemed to make more sense also. We are not going back to Rome. We are leaving Italy via Milan. With train connections I thought it made more sense to go CT - Florence - Venice much easier than Florence-CT-Venice.

Diane,

The second option is absolutely the best choice, as it minimizes travel times between each of the places you're visiting. Of special concern is the trip from Venice to the Cinque Terre, as you're pretty much crossing the country and that trip will take a minimum of about six hours.

The trip from Rome to the C.T. is VERY easy, if you use the right train. There are direct trains departing Roma Termini for La Spezia Centrale, with a travel time of ~3H:45M. From La Spezia to the closest C.T. town (Riomaggiore) is only about eight minutes. That's a VERY easy trip!

The trip from the C.T. to Florence is ~2.5-3 hours with about two changes. The exact time will depend on which of the C.T. towns you're departing from.

From Florence to Venice is 2H:05M via high speed Freccia train (you could also use the competing high speed Italo Treno on that route, as the stations are the same).

Be sure to note the stations you'll be using in each case, as you'll need to know that when buying tickets.....

  • Roma Termini
  • Cinque Terre town you'll be staying
  • Firenze SMN
  • Venezia Santa Lucia
