We have four days between Frankfurt and the start of our RS tour in Varenna May 13.
We would like to travel by train. We'd like to stay in smaller towns along the way..........suggestions ? Thanks !

Since Varenna is practically on the northern border, there aren't a lot of Italian towns between there and Frankfurt. Bergamo is supposed to be charming, but it's on the other side of Varenna from Frankfurt. Good luck.

You posted in the Italian section. Are you looking for just there -- or are France, Germany, and Switzerland okay as well?

I'd suggest going to the Deutsche Bahn website and use their journey planner to check routes between Frankfurt and Varenna. Once the various options come back, you can expand the routes and then choose to "show intermediate stops". This will give you an idea of some of the different train routes as well as the towns that are along that route. For example, I see one route that goes Frankfurt to Bern, Bern to Milan, and Milan to Varenna. Along the Frankfurt to Bern route, there is a stop in Freiburg im Breisgau. I stayed there years ago and really enjoyed it; it is a university town and was just a pleasant non-touristy place to stay. There are many other possible places to stay along the way (e.g. towns in the Bernese Oberland like Thun which is also very pleasant), but you might want to start with the basic route and work from there.
